Garnets are commonly accepted as the Birthstone for January and also as the Gemstone gift for those celebrating their second wedding Anniversary.

Most commonly Garnets are a deep red stone, however they do come in other colours most famously green.  The deep red is the most common and also the most popular in Jewellery.

The name Garnet means something like ‘the grainy one’, coming from the Latin ‘granum’, for grain. This makes reference not only to the typical roundish shape of the crystals, but also to the colour of the red garnet, Greeks may however have named the stone  as it often puts one in mind of the seeds of a ripe pomegranate.

Garnets have been known to Man for thousands of years. Noah, it is said, used a garnet lantern to help him steer his ark through the dark night. Throughout the ancient world the Garnet was used in Jewellery and can be seen from examples thousands of years old.

Many an early explorer and traveller liked to carry a garnet with him, for the garnet was popular as a talisman and protective stone, as it was believed to light up the night and protect its bearer from evil and disaster.

Clean garnet with a dry soft cloth. As with all Gemstone Jewellery, care should be taken to protect it from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.

Garnet is a reasonably priced stone. It is beautiful in rings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets. There are some beautiful orange garnets. A green tsavorite garnet is a very rare and high-priced stone.

Garnet Jewellery Set

April’s birthstone is the Diamond.

Often the gemstone of choice for jewellery, especially engagement and wedding jewellery, it has come to symbolise love.

The Diamond is one of the most well-known and most sought after of all the gemstones. The word Diamond coming from the Greek “adamas” meaning “unbreakable” it has long been used in jewellery.

A diamond is certified by four characteristics – carat, cut, colour and clarity – all which can affect the value of a diamond.

The Carat measures the weight of the Diamond. The higher the weight, generally the higher the price,  as larger diamonds tend to be rarer than smaller pieces.  However the price can also be affected by the other characteristics.

There are many different cuts that diamonds can be found in jewellery, these shapes are not naturally found, being designed by jewellers. Many diamond gemstones in jewellery can be found in the following designs: round brilliant cut, Princess cut, Oval cut, Baguette cut. The preference is dependent on the wearer.

The clarity of a diamond refers to the flaws in the stone which is why a flawless diamond can reach such high prices. The grading system is defined by the the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and ranges from FL meaning flawless to I where the stone is imperfect.

The colour of a diamond varies from stone to stone. The most popular colour on the market is the white diamond, however the diamond can also be found in virtually ever colour of the rainbow. Recently Black Diamonds have become popular and even Pink Diamonds have been worn. The white diamond colours are graded ranging from colourless to having yellow hues.

When choosing your diamond jewellery, some people will look at the cut and carat but you should buy the one that captures you the most.

With millions of sites where you can buy Gold and Silver jewellery online we should ensure that we make the right choices in relation to our need. Here are some of the questions you should ask yourself prior to making a purchase:

1. Are you clear on the quality of the item, ie is it 925 silver or less? If gold likewise do you know the if it is 8k/9k/10k etc. This can be important as it will affect the price.

2. Pictures are worth a thousand words, but be sure not to be decieved, often pictures are magnified to ensure a good view is available for the item, however this may not reflect the actual size so you must check this prior to purchase.

3. Again a picture might make an item look very sturdy/heavy or just more than it really is, check the weight of the metal and the carrot weight of the gemstone.

4. Check delivery, many people sell items on the web which are potentially subject to import tax, if you are buying from an overseas seller just check this and make sure you are not liable to a surprise additional cost on delivery.

5. Auction sites these can provide very good deals and fantastic bargains, however all of the above points are valid so check it out before you bid. The real downside can be waiting for the auction to end, sometimes there is a Buy It Now option and I would suggest you check how competitive this is prior to purchase.

I hope this helps and will try to update with more posts and information as we go along, However it would be good to get your comments and perhaps we can use everyones experience going forward.
